EDITOR: In the Sunday editorial ”Full circle,” you reported that North
Bay Corp. is seeking contract extensions from Sonoma County cities. Shame on
those cities that automatically extend garbage contracts without the benefit
of competitive bidding. Citizens deserve to know we are getting the best deal
for our hard earned money. This can only be done by putting the garbage
contracts out to bid.
In the current economic environment, with people losing their jobs and
homes, city officials are wrong to give a monopoly garbage company an open
checkbook.
North Bay Corp. is the same company that is fighting to derail the county
landfill divestiture project. Are they trying to have it both ways? The county
has publicly reported that North Bay Corp’s proposed recycling facility is in
direct competition with the county’s landfill divestiture project. North Bay
Corp. stands to financially gain by controlling all of the county’s garbage
should the landfill divestiture fail.
This Monday, March 30, from 8:30 to 11 a.m. in the Santa Rosa City Council
chambers, there will be a public workshop concerning the county landfill
divestiture project.
