Editor:
I read with interest the article in The Press Democrat about the Paul
Kelley campaign bringing in Dan Lungren to stump in a local race. I have never
heard of such a blatant attempt to turn local races into partisan politics.
Unfortunately, this seems to be the theme of Kelley’s campaign.
I attended his kickoff in Cloverdale some months ago because I had never
heard of him and wanted to hear him talk about his qualifications and his
plans for county government.
Instead, I heard a healthy dose of his philosophy, no specific plans that
would accomplish his goal of ”helping business” and a lot of talk about how
”we need three votes on the Board of Supervisors,” meaning three Republican
votes.
I am a Republican, but I really don’t understand how that has anything to
do with county government.
Partisan politics in Washington and Sacramento has brought us nothing but
political gridlock. Local government is supposed to be about solving problems
and planning for the future, not about partisan bickering.
Bringing a state official in to campaign for Kelley is not only the start
of a bad trend but it seems a clear indication that Kelley’s supporters feel
he can’t win the race on his own merits and needs all the help he can get.
That’s not what we need on the board.
