Editor:
The Santa Rosa Post Office in its recent mailbox flyer urges that
mailboxes be clearly marked with name and address, a reasonable request.
But then the ”Getting To Know You” article goes on to say, ”If for
privacy sake, you do not wish to advertise your name on the outside of the
box, tape a current list inside of all names receiving mail at your
address…”
While this is (at this point) only a suggestion, I believe it is dangerous
in that this information would then be readily accessible to crooks, to anyone
wishing to invade residential privacy. Should single women living alone, for
instance, make this information so readily available?
A Santa Rosa police officer who recently spoke to our group of retirees
suggested we should not ”advertise” we are seniors and I have since removed
retired member decals on our vehicles. I wonder, do law enforcement agencies
approve of this new Postal Service suggestion?
The street number on the box should be sufficient for the carrier to
efficiently deliver mail. And the Post Office already provides appropriate
forms for alerting the carrier to changes. Please, let’s not give crooks
another to prey upon us.
